Plants that have colorful foliage are commonly found in ornamental gardens. Often or not, are simply dumped without sufficient care or consideration. They are most effective however, when specific design potential is understood. This is true for a large number of garden plants whose foliage is a variant silver, gray or bluish-green.

Silver gray foliage is both typical and indicative of the conditions of dry and arid climates. Sage, lavender, Santolina, and herbs or herbs such as Artemisia originate in the Mediterranean, while the bush frutescens Leucophyllum silver leaf grows wild in Texas. (This is known locally as Texas Ranger) The size of the leaves of these plants are characterized by small, narrow and delicate texture.

Therefore, in terms of style, gray-leafed plants are best suited to Mediterranean-type garden, which combines well with juniper and cypress, olive, small-leaved shrubs like pistachios and sumac, herbs and cushion plants. Small, gray leaf herbs such as Festuca glauca can serve as a subtle transition between the silver-gray floors and a group of large ornamental grasses like Miscanthus and Pennisetum. Combined with blues, lilacs and roses and improving the effect created by ornamental stones.

Another role for silver plants is a sharp contrast to the plants that have dark purple foliage. Dusty Miller plants, Centaurea cineraria, or Senecio cineraria, can be very dramatic in a context of Prunus pisardii or cotinifolia Euphorbia. Similar effects can be created when combined with reds and oranges. It is here however that the experience tend to get carried away. plants Contrast should be used with moderation and prudence, being green foliage color dominant.

Grey plants do not mix well with, obviously, tropical plants. Typically, plants of tropical origin are dark green and have large, sometimes massive leaves. Birds of Paradise and Philodendron "red" are just two examples, with silver which plants appear incongruously out of place.

gray foliage can be found among all groups of different plants. Tree such as Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) varieties of Juniper as "Grey Owl", shrubs, grasses and prostrate ground covers. Among the latter, suitable for small areas are Dichondra argentea, and the sensational Lotus berthelotti (parrots Pico)
