What is an Oriental rug?

The term "Oriental rug" can be a source of confusion for those unfamiliar with the subject. It means literally a carpet manufactured in the Orient, and could legitimately be applied to any carpet of oriental origin, regardless of their appearance or hot I was made. In practice, however, the term is generally used only to describe the wing carpet products made using traditional methods of weaving districts ancient Persia (Iran), Antol (Turkey), Afghanistan, Caucasus, Baluchistan, Turkestan, China, India, Pakistan, the Balkans and parts of North Africa.

This vast region – which stretches from China to the Balkans and India north of the Caspian Sea – is inhabited by people of diverse cultural horizons infinitely, ethnic and religious whose only in common (apart from occupying territories along the old Silk Road is) seems to be their desire and ability to lift a boat carpet-making and a functional form of expression and deep appreciation of art.

It may be difficult for Westerners to appreciate the importance weaving in the East. Among the many nomadic tribal peoples was often the only way to liberate creative and even the most sophisticated cultures of Persia, the China and Ottoman Turkey, the fabric has always aligned with painting, architecture, sculpture and ceramics as a valid visual arts, and celebrated. A master weaver Anatolia or Persia took place in the same esteem as we hold Rembrandt or Vermeer, and even today there are some textile artists whose reputation and status equivalent to that of a contemporary artist in the West.

Much of this reverence is due to the fact that In addition to the carpet aesthetic value, have been an integral part of the experience thereligious the Islamic world. Every good Muslim is his own prayer rug special, and Islamic religious symbolism is behind most of the designs of carpets most universal. For this reason, some experts prefer the term e 'Islamic Textile Art "to describe oriental rugs, even though many elements included in this description may have been woven by non-Muslims and have no trace of Islamic symbolism in his compositions. Nor is this expression takes into account the element of Buddhists Taoist, Hindu, Christian and even images is at the heart of manyrug drawings.

It is likely that the religious symbolism that was once exclusive to each particular religion. But centuries of migration, conquest, occupation, marriage, trade and cultural – not to mention the trend artists to copy or reinterpret aspects of the most successful for other artists, the work has eroded much of that exclusivity. Today, it is quite normal and acceptable for non-Muslim prayer rug weaving only for their plans. This exchange of ideas visual permeates all facets of the art of weaving and is one of the main reasons alloriental carpet, regardless of their different composition, oissess underlying character which distinguishes them from the hand-woven carpets produced in other parts of the world.

By virtue of being hand made, all Oriental rugs can be regarded as unique – a weaver, no matter how he or she tried to follow a specific design, always small errors or innovations that give a flavor for the job but it is rare to find a gas weaver conscious effort to express their own ideas Creative at the expense of a traditional design.

The new models have changed course over the centuries, and will undoubtedly continue, but passion Western artistic freedom, originality and personal expression is not shared by textile artists from the East. It is perhaps because both are unique and at the same time faithful old traditions of oriental rugs that are objects of attraction and fascination of the West.

In addition to their underlying similarities character and appearance, oriental rugs are also defined by how they are made. They can be "hand-woven" or "hand-knotted. The first generally called kilims or Flatweave, and are generally less expensive and less common of the two types, or simply as carpets, and are generally considered the most important manifestations of art aesthetically satisfactory manufacturer oriental rugs. They are generally very well done, and although there is still relatively poor quality examples of the market, more sustainable and, if treated with a reasonable degree of care that will last for many years. The proof of what can seen an astonishing survival near the end of 19 and 20 easily, that one might be forgiven for thinking that only a few decades.

In summary, we can say that an Oriental rug, to be authentic in the sense of the term, must be hand-knotted or hand woven from a traditional regions of tissues and also follow certain ancestral patterns of composition and design.
