how to get rid of the thick ice build up in a freezer without having to take everything out and defrost it?

I have a freezer that usually complete and has about 2 inches thick of ice and snow flakes type on it. I'd take a knife to her, and chip away, but I mean no harm to the freezer. Is there a way to thaw without having to thaw foods too? Advice please.

The best way is to not buy food and use it to once a month then remove and let drain overnight. Failing to use space in the freezer of a friend or neighbor.
