My hardwood floors are much lighter in my area rugs. What is causing this?

We moved into an old house about a year ago. The previous owner had recently redone all the wooden floors below. We put the carpet in the bedrooms. The other week, I realized that the wood floors were much lighter beneath these mats as the rest of the plant. It is a major difference. Does anyone know what might be causing this? If it was the sunlight causes bleaching, which covers areas expected to be darker than the areas not covered, but it is exactly the opposite. In addition, we have only had the carpets up to a year!
