Stem rust is back with a vengeance 50 years after it was believed to be overcome, and now called Ug99, which decimates wheat in Kenya and contagion spread to other countries around Africa.
The disease returned in 1999, and jumped through the Red Sea to Yemen in 2006 and was discovered in Iran last year. crop scientists say there is no defense at that time to stop its spread and become increasingly frustrated in his work on the development of strains resistant. In about a year can grow to enormous levels, in particular weather conditions.
After food shortages last year due in part from corn being diverted to ethanol and the area used to grow other cereals was taken by maize, which led to food riots the year past, the growing epidemic shows the vulnerability of food supply in the poorest countries.
The scientists were surprised in 1999 when it was discovered that wheat bred for stem rust resistance fell fungus. That was the first sign that something was wrong.
Researchers in South Africa and recently Minnesota I found out why it was true. The constant agitation biological pest gives old with new genetic combinations, stem rust had acquired a fearful of breaking the resistance of wheat was stored for decades.
About eighty percent of the wheat varieties from Asia and Africa are now susceptible to the disease, and so is barley. The scientists called Ug99 new threat to its discovery in Uganda in 1999. But they say more than likely began in Kenya, where more wheat is grown.
Almost a year ago of the FAO that the fungus had spread to Iran and reported that "Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, all wheat producers, are most threatened by the fungus and should be on high alert .
Unlike regular rust infestations that reduce but not completely destroy yields, stem rust can eradicate an entire field.
Throughout the developing world, hundreds of millions of small farmers are the most vulnerable.
Wheat experts from around the world have mobilized to fight Rust. Headquarters for the effort is the season the Kenya Agricultural Research Institutes, near the village of Njoro.
Norman Borlaug, who is credited playback of corrosion-resistant wheat that saved millions from famine decades ago, was taken in 2005 by the Kenyans to see the damage and the new stem rust challenge.
Because the outbreak of stem rust last was 50 years ago, not many know the damage it could cause so scientists hired Borlaug other wheat producing countries and raised funds to finance their work. Foundations in the United States and Japan are involved, as well as the governments of Canada, India and the United States.
Researchers have been working tirelessly to find new plants resistant to Ug99 But after numerous tests, the plants have been losing the battle, as farmers around the world fear the right conditions are ravaging their crops.
Most trials in the U.S. being carried out in laboratories in Minnesota and Winnipeg, Canada to reduce the impact if the virus escapes from laboratories somehow, as the brutally cold weather provides another layer of protection if something goes wrong.
While there is much concern, at least scientists are working in ways that are not going to cut corners, and are methodically taking the necessary measures to combat Ug99 that will last.
